This well played in 1936 Epiphone Broadway has all of the classic characteristics of a walnut Broadway. It's super punchy with a fairly dry tone that cuts like quite no other type of guitar does. This example is freshly refretted by master luthier, Darrell Guinn and plays beautifully.
The Epiphone Broadway was made in a body with a 17 3/8" lower bout using walnut back and sides only from about 1936 to 1938, before that being made with a 16 3/8" body and after that using maple back and sides. This three year window is when Epiphone produced some of the most highly regarded guitars for jazz ensemble accompaniment, due in no small part to the walnut Broadway which was used by many professionals of the era. This is due to the great ability of these guitars to cut through the sound of a band without additional amplification. That said, they really are very capable guitars for many, many styles and are treasured by players who want an old school blues sound. For a guitar with as punchy of a sound, it also has a really nice amount of sustain.
This guitar features its orginal bridge and tuners. The tuners show replacement of the gear mounting screws on the treble side. The tuners continue to work great. The tailpiece and pickguard are replacements. The guitar shows lots of wear to the original finish and has clearly been played a lot (almost always a mark of a great guitar). Structurally, the guitar is sound with a solid neck angle, allowing for plenty of adjustment of the bridge height, either up or down, as the player prefers. There is a stable center seam crack of the back. While clearly seen on the outside, an endoscopic inspection of the inside does not reveal any internal evidence of the crack, indicating that this is largely a surface defect. The Adirondack spruce top and walnut sides are completely free of cracks.
The 5-ply mahogany/maple neck has a predominantly C-shaped carve with a very, very slight V-shape near the nut. The fretboard is in excellent condition without divots. The playability of great with no issues at all, thanks to the wonderfully installed new frets.
